We were thinking about dogs, exercise and our spacious play yard here at Tradewinds Pet Suites when an old song came to mind: “Home on the Range” – where buffalo roam and deer and antelope play. Actually, wrangling buffaloes is well above our comfort level, based in part on this video of paniolos on Kauai, but we take care of some pretty big canines, and we know that large or small, dogs need time to run and play.
If your dog has stayed with us before, she knows that her dog-boarding best friends at Tradewinds spend individual time with her every day, helping her feel comfortable, have fun and burn energy. Our kennels for medium and large dogs have indoor and outdoor space, so they never feel cramped. Little pups in our air-conditioned petite suites have plenty of room to roam, and they get an extra trip to the play yard every day.
American Humane encourages dog owners to take walks with their pups. “Most dogs won’t run around a fenced yard enough to get the exercise they need. If you and your dog walk a mile or more a day, you’ll both benefit by building strength and endurance, burning calories, breathing fresh air, and discovering what is new in the neighborhood.” Dog behavior expert Cesar Millan is a strong proponent of daily walks in addition to other forms of exercise.
In an article on exercise basics for dogs, PetMD says, “Though exercise needs are based on a dog’s age, breed, size, and overall health, your dog should spend between 30 minutes to two hours on an activity every day.” Animal Planet has 10 fun ways to exercise your dog and Cesar’s Way offers a few suggestions for exercising your dog indoors when needed.
But how often is that here in Hawaii? A walk on a dog-friendly beach sounds pretty good right about now.
